Technical support to countries

ExpandNet facilitators apply their practical scaling-up experience and knowledge of the ExpandNet guidance tools to provide scaling-up technical support to a range of institutions, initiatives and activities. Technical support from ExpandNet has ranged from shorter to longer engagements, some lasting a period of years, and routinely combine field-based and long-distance collaboration. The type of technical assistance depends on need, the phase of a project’s lifespan and available funding.

Longer-term support has helped teams to strategically plan for and subsequently manage scaling up processes, thereby fostering a culture of scale up within projects and programs.

In the provision of technical support, ExpandNet seeks every opportunity to mentor and build the capacity of project teams to apply a scaling-up focus in all decision-making processes.

Over a multi-year period ExpandNet worked with the Georgetown Institute for Reproductive Health (IRH) to build the institutional capacity to work on scaling up in the Fertility Awareness-based Methods (FAM) project across five countries and throughout their portfolio of work.
ExpandNet provided scaling-up technical assistance to the Urban Reproductive Health Initiative in India (UHI) during expansion to new cities in Uttar Pradesh. This entailed joint field visits, ongoing analysis of scaling-up outcomes, co-facilitating scaling-up workshops, and conducting project evaluations.
The USAID-funded Maternal Child Survival Program (MCSP) adapted and applied the ExpandNet/WHO framework and tools to support the scale up of high impact interventions over a multi-year period.
From the outset, the Health of People and the Environment in the Lake Victoria Basin project (HoPE-LVB) worked with ExpandNet to design and implement the pilot project with scale up in mind, undertook scaling-up strategy development and strategically managed the scaling-up process.
