National Level

Situation Analysis / Rapid Programme Review

The purpose of this step is to carry out an analysis of the health situation of adolescents in a country, and of the national response to it. It is intended to feed into the development/revision of a national strategy to improve the health of adolescents. The WHO report Health for the Worlds’ Adolescents. A second chance in a second decade brings together current WHO recommendations on policies and programmes to support the development and implementation of national policies and strategies that respond to priority health problems during adolescence.

Many organizations have produced situation analysis documents. WHO has a complete guide focusing on sexual and reproductive health.

The situation analysis on adolescent health of Zambia is an example of such an analysis.

Several standardized, international sources of information for adolescent health indicators exist. In addition to DHS surveys that include youth data on sexual and reproductive health, there are several surveys exclusively addressing on young people.  More than 60 countries are implementing the Global Student Health Survey (GSHS) and over 40 countries the European regional corollary, the Health Behaviour of School-going Children survey (HBSC).
